Rationale
Holmes Middle School aims to provide
students with a quality education in
a safe, wholesome environment.
School is a place where the
"business of learning" is of the
utmost value. The purpose of this
dress code is to focus the energies
of all who work here - faculty,
staff and students - on our primary
purpose: education.
Dress Code
Color: choice of 3 solid
colors - white, navy, khaki.
Sweatshirts (fleece material) of
gray color are permitted. No
visible labels or trim.
Corduroy and denim are allowed.
Shirt: polo shirt with collar
and sleeves; may have school logo or
plain; no exposed midsections; no
spaghetti straps; must
be long enough to tuck in. If
sweatshirt or over shirt is worn,
the collar must be visible.
Turtlenecks are allowed as
undershirts only. All undershirts
must be white, navy, or khaki.
Pants: no oversized pants;
pant legs must be hemmed at least 1
inch above the ground, without
splits, holes, tears or fraying; must be able to
remain above waist if belt is
removed; no tears. No sweat clothes
or warm-ups except in P.E. Capri
pants are allowed. Leggings are
allowed as long as they are navy,
khaki or white.
Shorts, skirts, or skorts:
must extend beyond fingertip length
and no longer than knee length;
Overalls are permitted, but with no
hanging straps. When wearing shorts,
socks cannot extend above the calf.
Belts: cannot be oversized,
or hang down from belt loops; belt
buckles with initials or insignias
are not permitted. No "shoelace"
belts.
Shoes: proper and safe foot
covering is required; steel-toed
shoes are not permitted. All shoes
must be enclosed (no open-toed or
bare-heel shoes) and may not have
heels.
Outerwear:
jackets/coats/sweatshirts/sweaters
must be of predominantly white, navy or khaki
colors; may
not have any professional, college
or commercial logos; sweatshirts
(fleece material) of gray color are
permitted. Bandanas and
sunglasses are not allowed on school
grounds at any time; chains and
spiked collars are not permitted.
Jewelry: All jewelry must be
worn with modesty and, most of all,
SAFETY, in mind. No spiked gages or
message bracelets are allowed.
Hats: Due to the passage of
California Bill SB310 students are
permitted to wear school approved
hats. Holmes Middle School has
chosen a navy blue bucket hat. The
brim must be worn down. No altering
of the hat is allowed. Hats will not
be worn indoors.
3. Enforcement
All teachers will refer students to
the Dean; penalties may include a
warning, parent conference, lowering
cooperation grade, paper pick-up,
detention, and/or suspension.
