PHYSICAL EDUCATION CONTENT STANDARDS

The physical education curriculum at Holmes Middle School is based upon the California Middle School Physical Education Model Content Standards. There are five overarching standards for middle school students. They are as follows:

Standard 1: Students demonstrate the motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
Standard 2: Students demonstrate knowledge of movement concepts, principles, and strategies that apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.
Standard 3: Students assess and maintain a level of physical fitness to improve health and performance.
Standard 4: Students demonstrate knowledge of physical fitness concepts, principles, and strategies to improve health and performance.
Standard 5: Students demonstrate and utilize knowledge of psychological and sociological concepts. Principles, and strategies that apply to the learning and performance of physical activity.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION UNIFORM

Students are expected to dress for physical education class every day. T-shirts and shorts may be purchased at the student store. Students may also wear sweatpants and sweatshirts for cold weather. All shirts and shorts must have the student’s FIRST and LAST name printed in the white boxes with BLACK marker. Students must also wear athletic shoes and white socks (recommended color) every day. For reasons of safety and optimum performance, shoes must be tightly laced and tied. Day. day. Students cannot wear clothing that they wear to school underneath or over their physical education uniform. The physical education uniform should be taken home each Friday to be laundered and returned to school on Monday. Students are not allowed to share clothing and if they are caught wearing another student’s uniform they will be graded for the day as a ‘non-dress’.

HEALTH EXCUSES/ACCOMMODATIONS OF PARTICIPATION

A note from a parent/guardian or doctor is REQUIRED in order to be excused from participating in class activities. The following procedure should be adhered to when a student brings a health excuse to school: 1) written note from a parent/guardian must be presented to the school nurse BEFORE advisory class, and 2) the school nurse will issue a health office referral form to be taken to physical education class and presented to the teacher. Parents and physicians are HIGHLY ENCOURAGED to confirm as to what the student is still able to do (walk. stretch, etc.) as opposed to requesting total abstinence from physical activity. Teachers will make accommodations and modify participation as needed. Our district Parent Handbook states that a parent/guardian may request up to five days of modified activity. Over five days of modified activity/and or inactivity requires a doctor’s note. Students with health excuses are still required to dress for class and to keep up with all class assignments.

MAKE-UP ASSIGNMENTS

It is the student’s responsibility to request missing assignments after a school absence. On Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:15 pm – 4:00 pm students may stay after school and make up class assignments such as a 20 minute run, a timed mile, and an obstacle course. All students should check with their teacher before staying after school to make-up any work. Students need to be dressed in their physical education uniform in order to participate in make-up assignments.

20 MINUTE RUN GRAPHS

All students will complete a 20 Minute Run Graph for the Fall and the Spring Semester. A run graph is a bar graph that records that number of laps that the student runs each Friday during our 20 minute runs. Several teachers require that this run graph be kept in a physical education notebook called a ‘Sportfolio’. The graph is collected at the end of each semester. Sample run graphs are posted in the office windows.
