What is T.U.P.E.?
T.U.P.E. stands for Tobacco Use
Prevention Education, which is a
district funded program to educate
our community about the health
hazards involved in using tobacco
products. TUPE activites include:
• The Great American Smoke Out or
Kids Kick Ash (school wide activity
in November)
• Save a Sweetheart (school wide
activity in February)
• Non-smoking displays
• Assemblies
• Provides Tobacco Use Prevention
lesson plans to teachers
• Responsible for posting No Smoking
signs in all classrooms, offices and
school entrances
• TUPE Tips in the weekly bulletin
and PA Announcements
• Maintain an Anti-smoking film
library available to teachers
Where can I find information
about T.U.P.E.?
T.U.P.E. information can be found in
the nurse's office, but the main
source of posters, videos, and
literature is in room 303.
When does T.U.P.E. run their
program?
T.U.P.E. is always up and running.
You can refer students you suspect
are using tobacco products for
information, or you can refer them
if they need information to help a
family member quit using tobacco
products. There are also special
events that happen throughout the
year that are promoted through
homeroom. Included in this program
are weekly bulletin announcements
and weekly P.A. announcements.
Why is T.U.P.E. on campus?
T.U.P.E.'s goal is to try to reach
the entire community to educate and
bring more awareness about tobacco
abuse. It also supports some main
topics covered within the 6th and
7th grade science curriculums.
How does T.U.P.E. get the
information to us?
You are welcome to pick up any
videos, posters, or information
anytime in room 303, otherwise the
program reaches its highest
population through homerooms during
special events.
Who provides the funding? The
funding comes from Title IV - State
and Local programs of the Elementary
and Secondary Education Act - the
Safe and Drug Free Schools and
Communities Act (SDFSCA) State
Grants Program. A major portion of
the funding comes from the CA State
Proposition 99 that increased the
tax on tobacco sales. The Federal
government also provides
anti-tobacco education fund through
the State Department of Health
Services. |
