PE Standards

Course Description
  • The physical education curriculum at Oliver Wendell Homes Middle School is based upon the National Standards & Grade-Level Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education.  The goal of physical education is to develop physically literate individuals who have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity.  The five overarching standards for physical education are as follows:

     

    Standard 1:       The physically literate individual demonstrates competency in a variety of motor skills  and movement patterns.

    Standard 2:         The physically literate individual applies knowledge of concepts, principles,                 

  •                              strategies, and tactics related to movement and performance.

    Standard 3:         The physically literate individual demonstrates the knowledge and skills to achieve and

  •                              maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness.

    Standard 4:         The physically literate individual exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that 

  •                              respects self and others.

    Standard 5:        The physically literate individual recognizes the value of physical activity for health 

  •                              enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction.

 
 Physical education content standards address both “what students need to know and what they need to be able to do”.  Written assignments in physical education class perform the following functions: 1) review material  learned in class, 2) emphasize what students need to know, 3) help assess student learning, 4) offer an alternative modality for students to show their knowledge of the physical education content standards, 5) reinforce subject matter learned aurally and orally in class, 6) offer students a visual representation of the physical education curriculum, 7) reinforce reading and writing across the curriculum, 8) reinforce key content vocabulary, and  9) address the cognitive domain of physical education.  All homework assignments must be turned in at the beginning of class the day that they are due.  Most assignments are due the following instructional day
