Honors English 7 Assignments

UPDATE: A second extra credit assignment is now available.  Students can pick it up in the classroom beginning after school on Thursday, May 26.

 

Extra credit is available.  It is an extra credit book portfolio and it is worth 60 extra credit points. It requires an AR quiz, completion of the new reading journal and a reflection.  The handouts are available in the classroom.

 

 

Reread "There Will Come Soft Rains."  Highlight passages where the house and fire are personified (act, think, feel like a person). 

Grade sheets distributed in class today.  Please sign and return.

Revise essay if you received C+ or below or Redo.  Highlight the changes you made on the final draft.

Writing Prompt: Imagine you are the last person on Earth.  You have been on your own in your house surviving on canned food and bottled water.  After several months, you go outside to look around.  Describe your street.  What is different?  What has stayed the same?

Length: ¾- 1 page

Work on book portfolio.  Remember, the book portfolio includes an AR quiz, reading log and one of the two options for book analysis.  Instructions for the book analysis options were sent home with students on Tuesday, May 3.

The two options are:

1. Book talk

2. 5-paragraph essay on the theme of the book

Read over grade sheet, sign and return.

Decide on a career topic to research.  Topics will be checked tomorrow.  See sheet distributed in class.

Write a 2-5 page extension of the story "Seventh Grade" that takes place no more than a year later.  Your story must stay true to the original story line.

Your sequel must have:

Descriptive and detailed paragraphs, including sensory and figurative language.

Engaging dialogue

A conflict and resolution (no cliff hangers or open endings)

Original characters of Victor, Michael and Teresa, but you may add more.

 

 

 

Finish career project if you did not finish it in class.

 

Due to the block schedule,

 Period 1 and 3 will be collected on Thursday.

Period 2 and 4 will be collected on Friday.

If you are in Periods 1 and 3 and need until Friday to complete it, it is your responsibility to drop it off before or after school, nutrition or lunch.

Complete vocabulary squares sheet for "Seventh Grade."

Find a poem by a well-known poet.  You can use one of the poets from class or look for one online (type in "best poems for middle school" in the search engine).  Print a copy.  Read and annotate.  Find and discuss a central idea/ theme. 

Read and write in reading log and work on book portfolio.  The 10 week book portfolio due on March 8.  As always, it will include the AR quiz, a completed reading log and a book analysis.

Read "Rogue Drones a Growing Nuisance Across the US," highlight and annotate (distributed in class).  Be sure to write the claim and five supporting details at the end.

Complete ad survey.  Use the one done in class as a guide.  You may use commercials, magazine ads, bill boards or internet ads.

Read article on drones (distributed in class on Wednesday).  Highlight main ideas and annotate.  Respond to the questions at the end of the article.

Read and write in log.  Book portfolio due on February 2, 2016.

Finish reading Act I of A Christmas Carol (in the purple literature book). Pg. 615-622.

Annotate your chosen editorial.  Use the directions distributed in class and staple to the front of the article.

Complete reading log for book portfolio (distributed in class)

Complete book analysis sheet (attached below and distributed in class)

Take the AR quiz and submit printout with your name, title of book, date of quiz and score. 

Type (or print neatly) your final draft of your narrative.  Use a 12 pt font in Times New Roman, Arial, or any other plain, easy-to-read font. 

 

Staple in this order:  Your final draft on top, then your rough draft.  The story map goes on the bottom. 

 

Complete description double-entry journal.  Find three examples of good descriptions in your book.  Copy them in the table and explain the tone that they set or what makes them powerful descriptions.

Grade sheets were distributed in class today.  Please have parent/guardian sign and return.

The 15-week book portfolio is due on November 2.  Be sure to include the following:

1.  Completed 15-week book analysis sheet

2.  Reading log with ten complete entries

3.  AR quiz with the student's name, score, title of book and the date they took the quiz.

Complete vocabulary squares for "The Landlady."

Complete dialogue entry journal for your current or past AR book.  Write 3 examples of dialogue.  Explain the purpose of the dialogue.  What does it reveal about the characters or how does it advance the story?

Create and illustrate a plot diagram for a favorite book, story or movie.  Include images for the key events.  Be sure to include events for exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution.

Get grade sheet signed.

Complete vocabulary squares for "After Twenty Years."

Rewrite "Flint"/"Life" paragraph if you received C+ or below or Redo.

10 week book portfolio due.  Please staple the pages in this order:

 

1.  The AR quiz.  Be sure you turn in a printout with your name, the date quiz was taken and the score. 

2.  The reading log with ten entries of at least 3-5 sentences.

3. Completed book analysis on the bottom.  Be sure you have completed both sides.

 

Complete figure of speech foldable (distributed in class)

 

You will create and design a mini-book defining and illustrating each of the 7 figures of speech.

Each page must have the following:
• A figure of speech and the definition (for Honors, the figure of speech must be original)
• A hand-drawn illustration in color
• At least one example of the figure of speech.

Complete back side of figurative language sheet. Be sure to explain 3 of each figure of speech.

For this week, make sure you read for thirty minutes and write in your reading log.  The 10 week book portfolio is due on October 5.

Complete vocabulary squares for "The Cat Who Thought She Was a Dog and the Dog Who Thought He Was a Cat." 

 

Make sure you use the blank squares at the end for words in the text you don't know.

Revise "parrot" expository paragraph if you received C+ or below or a "redo."

 Staple the revision to the original.

 If you want the new grade to be reflected on the 5 week report card, the revision must be turned in no later than Wednesday, 9/9.

 

 

Book portfolio due September 3.  You must have at least ten entries in your reading log.

The book portfolio for the 5 week report card will consist of:

A completed reading log with ten entries

A completed book analysis sheet

SSR Prompt #1
Responses must be at least ½ a page. If you type it, it must be 12 pt. font in Arial or Times New Roman. Double-spaced must be a full page.  Be sure to include the title and the author of the book.

This is done for your Sustained Silent Reading book at home.  If you are reading a fiction book, use the fiction prompt.  If you are reading a nonfiction book, use the nonfiction prompt.
Fiction: Write a letter to a character about a decision he or she has made so far in the book. Briefly summarize the decision and give your opinion on it. Would you have made the same decision?
Nonfiction: What part what you read were you able to visualize the action and why?

Be sure to complete the topic sentence sheet for Wednesday.
